Unmasking the Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing

Recently, I attended a performance aptly titled Masquerade.

As the singers emerged, all in black, their faces concealed by intricate masks, I struggled to recognize my daughter among them. Heels and 36 inches of flowing hair had transformed her into a vision of elegance and sophistication.

But it was a masquerade. Without the costume, she’s a delightful 16-year-old high school student with a messy room and a love for singing and volleyball.

That moment served as a profound reminder of how appearances can be deceiving, especially in the world of business where a person’s true character isn’t always immediately discernible.

When someone proclaims their Christian faith, there’s an expectation for them to embody certain values. But that doesn’t always happen. It’s baffling, much like when the driver of a car bearing an “I ❤️ Jesus” sticker drives recklessly and flashes unmentionable hand gestures.

To draw a parallel to the business world: an employee wearing your company’s logo is a direct reflection of your brand. If they misalign, the entire brand’s image is at stake.

I managed an employee known for his vulgar language. I told him, “When you’re off work and not wearing our company’s uniform, you’re free to speak as you wish. But when you have our uniform on, I expect professionalism in everything you do and say.”

Similarly, when we bear the “Christian in business” mantle, our actions should be consistent with our faith’s teachings.

As part of the Christian Chamber, we commit to a professional life underpinned by our faith’s principles. It’s not just about business—it’s about integrity, trustworthiness and authenticity. It’s an honor to be a brand ambassador for Christ in the marketplace.

Regrettably, not everyone who claims to be a Christian actually is. Sometimes they’re wolves in sheep’s clothing, masquerading as something they’re not, trying to take advantage of our trusting community.

That’s not an excuse for us to be less than what we know we should be. To foster a business world that resonates with true Christian values, we must continuously reflect on our own actions and help guide those around us.

As we collectively strive to further God’s kingdom through our businesses, encountering the occasional wolf in sheep’s clothing is inevitable. But rather than dismissing or maligning them, gently confront them. Engage in a heartfelt conversation. Understand their perspective, pray for their growth, and guide them towards true Christian values.

Remember, our mission isn’t only to thrive in business but to shine the light of Christ through our endeavors. Let’s make every action, every deal, every interaction a reflection of our commitment to our faith and our community.
