ACCUSATIONS, BLAME AND BIAS
When the Kansas City Chiefs unexpectedly lost their Christmas Day game at Arrowhead Stadium to their long-time rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders, an improbable scapegoat emerged for their losing streak. Taylor Swift, who has never played a down, called a play or even touched the football during a game, was blamed for the team’s losing streak. Influential figures, Chiefs fans, and sports commentators, including Skip Bayless, pointed fingers at the pop star. Bayless said, “Feels like it’s about time to call Taylor Swift a distraction.”
This situation raises questions about the rationality of blame and the tendency to seek convenient, albeit baseless, explanations for failure.
It’s not uncommon for people to look for someone to blame when something isn’t going right. We see it as early as Genesis 3 in the Bible when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. Adam reminded God that he gave him the woman, then Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the serpent.
A parallel to shifting blame and avoiding responsibility when things go wrong is the refusal to give credit where credit is due when things go right. It was something I encountered again and again as I was climbing the corporate ladder. There were those people who, instead of recognizing and celebrating my skills and abilities, attributed my success to other factors and engaged in ugly gossip and false conjecture about how I had “earned” my promotions.
In both success and failure, people are often quick to overlook individual effort and performance, choosing instead to attribute outcomes to external factors. This undermines the achievements of the successful and pardons individuals for responsibility in failure, creating a culture where proper accountability and merit are often overshadowed by unfounded speculation and societal biases.
No one is exempt from unfair accusations and the intricacies of office politics, regardless of whether they earn billions or a modest income.
Without careful examination and critical thinking, we all risk being guilty of flawed reasoning and unjust conclusions. Taylor Swift attending her boyfriend’s football games is a public reminder that there will always be a need to be aware of casual attribution and confirmation bias in shaping our perception and judgment.
In today’s fast-paced world, where we are bombarded with an overwhelming flow of information, it becomes increasingly challenging to pause and engage in thoughtful reflection. Leadership guru John Maxwell constantly urges leaders to embrace the practice of pondering.
When you jump to conclusions or join in on the blame game, take a step back and question the basis of these thoughts. Is there concrete evidence, or are you following a narrative shaped by biases and societal pressures?
You contribute to a culture of fairness and reasoned judgment by challenging your own perceptions and refusing to go along with the majority view. This approach fosters personal growth and creates an environment where truth and justice can prevail over baseless accusations, hasty judgments and groupthink.

This means engaging in regular prayer and self-reflection, challenging our worldly biases, and seeking God’s wisdom in understanding the world and our place in it. Doing so makes us beacons of light in a world often clouded by negativity.
