We are a little more than a week away from the 2024 presidential election, perhaps the most important election in our lifetime. Yet research projects that 104 million people of faith, including 32 million Christian regular churchgoers, won’t bother to vote.

A primary reason for the diminished interest in this year’s election is distaste for both major party candidates (Donald Trump, Kamala Harris).

I get that. But right now, personalities don’t matter. Race and gender don’t matter. Age doesn’t matter.

Our country is in serious trouble, and we need serious leadership to get it back on track.

Why are people of faith not voting?

The CRC’s research showed:

  • Lack of interest in politics and elections: 68%
  • Disliking all of the major candidates: 57%
  • Feeling that none of the candidates reflect their most important views: 55%
  • Believing their one vote will not make a difference: 52%
  • Feeling that the election has become too controversial: 50%
  • Believing that the election outcome will be rigged: 48%

The fact is, politics and elections control our lives. They determine whether we live in a free society. How can you not be interested in such an important topic?

You don’t have to be friends with the people you vote for. You don’t have to invite them over for dinner. You just have to agree with most of their positions on important issues and what they plan to do when elected.

One vote makes a difference. Countless elections have been determined by a few votes. Everyone’s vote makes a difference.

Why should Christians vote?

Because the Bible tells us to submit to governing authorities, and voting is part of that. (Romans 13:1-7)

Voting allows us to assert our right to speak and be heard when it comes to our government. It gives us an opportunity to seek the best for the people around us, our communities, and the nation as a whole. It shows that we care who our leaders are.

Voting is a simple way to have an impact on the politics of our nation. It’s a privilege denied to many in the world and a responsibility that should not be taken for granted. (James 4:17)

If we accept God’s command to be good stewards, then we will vote because voting is an act of stewardship.

Christians, your vote makes a difference—and it makes a difference for every candidate and issue on your ballot. We have a responsibility to be involved in our society and government, and we can do that by getting informed and voting.

Pray, do your research, make your choice, cast your ballot, and leave the rest to God.
