What are some of the biggest challenges CEOs, founders and business owners face today?

A recent Deloitte CEO survey showed that at the start of 2024, 73% of CEOs were optimistic or very optimistic about their organizations’ performance, but they also identified key strategic challenges:

  1. Attracting, retaining, and training talent
  2. Geo-political disruptions and election impacts
  3. Managing inflation, cost structures, and profitability
  4. Gaining market share
  5. The impact of advanced technology and AI

As a leader, how are you addressing these issues? Are you walking the path alone, or tapping into the strength and wisdom of others or a peer group?

Even the smartest and hardest-working CEOs are facing serious exhaustion. It’s not that they’ve stopped running their businesses, but with mounting pressures from banks, uncertainty in the market, and employee challenges, they feel constrained and overwhelmed.

An accountability team or peer advisory group can help unpack the blind spots, confront doubts, and cut through head trash. Leaders often feel defeated when they’re isolated, hearing only their own biased thoughts. The peer group becomes a lifeline for clarity, support and the resilience needed to keep pushing forward.

Utilizing a peer advisory group can help you with making critical cultural changes. This group functions much like your own board of advisors—without the power to fire you.

Unlike friends, family, or employees, who may either tell you what you want to hear or lack the full picture and are therefore unable to provide usable advice, peer groups bring a balanced, unbiased perspective. They challenge you to consider risks and weigh the pros and cons that you might otherwise overlook. These groups not only provide wisdom but also hold you accountable for following through on decisions.

Leo Bottary, author and founder of Peernovation, says the many advantages of CEO peer groups include collaboration, accelerating business growth, and the invaluable opportunity to not only get your questions answered but to have your answers thoughtfully questioned.

Mike Sharrow, CEO of C12 Christian Business Forums, says, “Don’t lead alone. Your peers can help you build a great business for a greater purpose.” He emphasizes that leaders limit their potential when they lead in isolation. These groups dive deep together, making better decisions, avoiding costly mistakes, and creating strategies for sustainable business growth—while also striving to have an impact far beyond financial gains.

Where are you getting counsel?

Proverbs 11:14 states the need for a broad counseling net: “Where no wise guidance is, the people falleth; But in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”
