Our employees often tell me how much they love working at H&H Products. One common reason they give is because our culture is different.

That doesn’t surprise me. Shouldn’t companies run by Christian leaders be the best places to work? Shouldn’t our company culture be a witness of the love of Jesus in us?

Here are a few of the top reasons people view a company as a good employer and why Christians should have an advantage.

1. Servant leadership

I truly believe that this is one of the deciding factors in a company’s success. In Good to Great by Jim Collins, the level 5 leader is an example of a servant leader. As Christians, we have the greatest example of servant leadership documented through the life of Jesus. If we are true followers of Jesus, servant leadership should come naturally.

2. A company that prioritizes the welfare of its employees

As Christian employers, we should want to be fair with our employees. Pay, benefits, opportunities for growth, rewards, discipline and work life balance are just some of the factors to consider, and how we deal with those issues should flow from the love of Christ into the lives of others.

The second part of the Greatest Commandment conversation is “to love others as ourselves.” If we apply that command to our employees, they will feel appreciated and treated well.

3. Good leadership

Leading a company is hard. But, as Christians, we are armed with the Holy Spirit, the literal voice of God in our lives. He leads us in every decision we make, even in our businesses.

4. Developing a culture that employees love

Developing the culture for your company can be challenging but it is also very rewarding. In fact, I believe this is a key to a company’s success. Employees want to know what is expected of them and what they can expect from the company.

Your culture defines what’s appropriate and inappropriate in your company. This can be a daunting task if you don’t have some basic guidelines to frame your culture. Good news! As Christians, we have an entire Bible that gives us guidelines that can be applied to defining our culture.

5. Great co-workers

Great employees attract other great employees. But it starts with leadership. If we as Christian employers are living out our faith, and living out the culture we have developed, we will attract good people and they will attract more good employees. When employees are aligned with culture, they then become ambassadors for that same culture.

Christian employers should naturally lead companies that are best places to work because of living out our Christian values. When I was growing up, sometimes a teacher would give us an open-book test.

In other words, the answers are in the book, you just have to find them. As we lead our companies, we are taking an open-book test, and we have the ultimate book in hand: the Bible.

Why shouldn’t we be the best employers?
